Wildcats make it two in a row
ALLEN — The Hartington-Newcastle Wildcats have won two straight football games after dropping their first four games of the season and appear to be making a spirited run through district opponents after taking care of Tri County Northeast Sept. 30 37-8 on the road.
The two teams traded blows throughout the first 12 minutes until the Wildcats broke through with only 51 seconds expired in the second quarter.
Lane Heimes scored the first of his pair of touchdown runs on the evening from a yard out and the Cats went up 6-0 after a failed conversion pass.
The Wolfpack answered on a 24-yard run from Dylan Boyle and a successful conversion run to take their first and only lead of the contest 8-6.
The rest of the opening half was defensive again until Riley Sudbeck crossed the goal line with just 22 seconds left in the half, then he ran in the two-points to send the teams to the intermission with the Wildcats up 14-8.
Early in the third quarter, Sudbeck cashed in from 17 yards away then hit Turner Dendinger for the conversion and the score was 22-8.
Hartington-Newcastle sealed the game in the final frame when Kale Korth plowed in from the one and Heimes ran it in for the two points; then Heimes scored his second TD from 41 yards away and after an Ayden Rosener kick the 37-8 final score was set.
Heimes led the Wildcat rushing attack with 147 yards on his 18 carries,Korth added 51 and Sudbeck had 48.
Sudbeck also completed 2-of-4 passes for 30 yards, one to Dendinger and one to Heimes.
Sudbeck was just as valuable on the other side of the ball as he recorded 15 tackles, including 11 solo stops, Korth had 14 and Rosener had 10.
Korth and Rosener each had a tackle behind the line of scrimmage. Daniel Steffen and Dendinger shared a tackle for a loss and Korth had an interception.
The Wildcats return home Oct. 7 for a date with the undefeated Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears who will bring a 6-0 record into Hartington.
