Wakefield tops Wynot boys in consolation action
HARTINGTON — Wynot met Wakefield in the consolation bracket of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament Saturday at the Cedar Catholic Gym.
Wynot built a 10-point halftime lead only to see it slip away when Wakefield went on a 21-9 fourth-quarter run to earn the 56-51 win.
Free throws were one deciding factor in the game as Wakefield went 11-15 while the Blue Devils had less chances hitting 1-2 from the charity stripe.
Wynot got a super game from their point guard on offense as Anthony Haberman exploded for 27 points. Wakefield got much better balance as Blake Brown dumped in 20 points, most of them coming in the deciding fourth period. Justin Erb and Cade Johnson help the Trojans rally with 15 and 14 points respectively.
The Blue Devils got off to a quick start in the opening quarter with nine points by Anthony Haberman and four points from Charlie Schroeder as they took an early 20-11 lead. The Trojans got seven points from Justin Erb to fuel their offense.
In the second quarter, Cade Johnson tried to rally the Trojans with seven more points but Wynot got four points from Zack Foxhoven and 3-pointers by Anthony Haberman and Jack Kuchta to maintain a 34-24 halftime advantage.
Offenses slowed down in the third quarter as the Trojans started to claw their way back thanks in part to five points by Justin Erb and a pair of buckets by Blake Brown. Wynot got four points by Anthony Haberman a bucket in close each by Garrett Lange and Charlie Schroeder. Anthony Haberman scored all nine of the Blue Devils points in the final quarter. Wakefield got six points from Blake Brown, five points from Cade Johnson and a 3-pointer from Justin Erb.
The Trojans also hit 9 of 11 freethrows to seal the 56-51 win.
