Runners cross finish line at two meets

PENDER - The Randolph Cardinals and Lady Cardinal cross country teams completed a rather busy week here at the Twin Creeks Golf Course competing in the Pender Invitational on Sept. 19.

Earlier in the week, trio making up the boys and girls cross country teams ran in a meet hosted by Neligh-Oakdale.

Homer won the boys’ division of the Pender Meet with 22 points; Ponca was second with 30 and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge logged 43. Oakland-Craig was one point behind LCC at 44 and Yutan rounded out the top five with 64, a tie-breaker ahead of Tri County Northeast which also scored 64.

Pender was the top team in the girls’ division with 10 points; Homer was second with 21; Ponca was third with 24; Oakland-Craig was fourth with 37 and the Lady Bears posted 42.

Dawson Meyer from Oakland-Craig won the race in 17:24.79 with Gannon Pfister of Ponca second at 17:50.13, the only runners below 18 minutes.

The two Randolph runners, freshman Kamdin Worlein and sophomore, Brecken Shearer came in 49th and 50th with times of 23:27.02 and 24:36.44.

In the girls’ division, Ava Brennan from Ponca was first in 20:22.45; a couple of Pender runners, Kyla Krusemark and Megan Bretbarth were second and third.

Lady Cardinal freshman Emily Gilliland came in 27th with a time of 25:02.24.

“The competition was very strong in the Pender meet,” Randolph coach Tom Shafer said. “All three of our runners had their best times of the season although none of them received a medal.”

No team scores were kept in the meet hosted by Neligh-Oakdale but Gilliland did receive a medal coming in 14th with a time of 25:03.

Randolph cross country will compete in the Crofton Invitational on Sept. 26.
