Cardinals come up short at Homecoming
RANDOLPH - The defending Class D2 State runner-up came to town Sept. 20 to take on the Randolph Cardinals on the gridiron.
After a good start by the Cardinals, the Wynot Blue Devils found a groove and sent Randolph to its fourth loss as the season reaches its midway point.
The Blue Devils scored first on an 18-yard Andre Haberman run, then added a conversion pass to go up 8-0 in a hurry.
Randolph’s Shaw Backer had an answer as the Cardinals used a 10-yard dash to get back to within two after the conversion play was no good.
Wynot responded with a couple of long pass plays, one from 54 yards and one from 36 yards to go up 22-6 heading into the second 12 minutes.
However, Devin Brummer, the Blue Devils’ quarterback had a pretty good second quarter.
After heaving the two long passes at the tail end of the first frame, Brummer completed scoring passes of 34, 70 and 53 yards before the intermission to help Wynot take control of the game.
The Cardinals headed into the halftime intermission behind, 42-6.
A short run and a conversion aerial from Brummer in the third and the Cardinals trailed a stunning 50-6.
With the 35-point continuous clock running, Randolph managed another score, this one from a 6-yard Brentley Reimers pass from Jaylen Junck and the final score was set.
Gage Jensen was the leading rusher for Randolph picking up 46 yards on a dozen carries, Backer gained 41 yards on his 14 totes.
Dayton Winkelbauer completed a couple of passes, one to Luke Harder for 54 yards and one to Backer for four yards.
Junck completed his only attempt to Reimers for the touchdown.
Backer led the Cardinal defense with eight total tackles including three solo stops. Joe Gonzalez wrapped up seven tackles, Lucas Bartels and Kaden Thorell each had five and Ryan Engel had four.
Gavin Wortman recovered a Blue Devil fumble.
Randolph will be at home again Sept. 27 when the Cardinals will take on undefeated Bancroft-Rosalie before hitting the road for a couple of games.
The Panthers own wins over Tri County Northeast, Homer, Neligh-Oakdale and Walthill.
