Rose, Hoeppner lead LCC runners at recent meets

LAUREL - The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge cross country teams hosted its invitational at Cedarview Country Club on Sept. 12 and ran in the Wayne Invitational on Sept. 16 to complete a busy week.

In the Wayne Invitational, the Bears came in sixth in the team race with 84 points. Wayne won the meet with 19, Norfolk Catholic was second with 34 and Pierce was third with 56. Winnebago and Hartington-Newcastle filled out the top five followed by LCC.

Kendall Shada from Pierce won the boys’ individual title with a time of 15-minutes, 42.65 seconds over two minutes ahead of Wayne’s Drew Miller, who was runner-up.

Preston Rose was the top Laurel-Concord-Coleridge runner placing 13th in 19:36.87. Carter Korth and Shane Langford were 24th and 25th respectively with John McDermott 43rd, Sebastian Van Drongelen 52nd and Luke Jackson coming in 60th.

Faith Galvin paced the Lady Bears, coming in 12th with a time of 23:25.82. Zoey Ebmeier of Pierce won the individual title in 20:56.90 with Ponca’s Ava Brennan placing second in 21:17.05.

Addy Hoeppner and Kate Tasler were 16th and 17th for Laurel-Concord- Coleridge, Abbie Brummels was 21st, Leah Gould was 23rd and Ava Christiansen finished in 34th.

In the Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Invitational, Homer won the boys’ team title with a score of 15, Ponca was second with 27, Hartington-Newcastle was third with 39 and the Bears came in sixth with 48 points.

Rose led a trio of LCC runners with a 15th-place showing, Korth was 16th and Langford was 17th.

McDermott was 31st, Van Drongelen came in 45th and Jackson was 52nd.

The Lady Bears finished fourth with 28 points, two behind thirdplace Hartington-Newcastle and 10 behind Homer which won the meet with 18 points, the same total as runner-up Ponca which was edged out by a tie-breaker.

Hoeppner was the top Lady Bears finisher coming in 10th in just under three seconds faster than teammate, Galvin, who was 11th.

“I felt stronger today than our other meets,” Hoeppner said. “I think it was because this is our home course, I’m more used to running here.”

She hopes her finish is a sign for things to come.

“We just need to keep working to get better and drop our times,” she said. “We hope to get our entire team to state this year.”

Ponca’s Brennan won the individual title with a time of 21:14.37, Lilly Harris of Homer was second in 21:37.20.

Tasler finished 13th for LCC, Brummels was 16th, Gould was 18th and Christiansen was 25th.

The Bears and Lady Bears are scheduled to run in the Pender Invitational on Sept. 19 at Twin Creeks Golf Course just north of Pender.
