Reifenrath, McPhillips are the best in the State

OMAHA — A pair of Hartington track athletes proved last weekend they are two of the best in the State.

Sara Reifenrath stood atop the All Class Gold Medal list after her 200-meter dash victory.

Reifenrath burned around the track in :24.66 to top the Class C field in the event. Her next closest competitor in the  event was Ashley Ostrand of Emerson-Hubbard/Pender, who finished  more than a second behind her in 25.84.

Lincoln McPhillips earned the All Class Gold Medal in the long jump. 

He easily out-distanced the Class D field to win the gold with a jump of 22-11.25.

His next closest competitor was Class A’s Reid Nelson of Elkhorn South, who recorded a jump of 21-11.75.

Both local athletes took plenty of hardware home from the State Track Meet. 

Besides winning the long jump, McPhillips also earned gold in the 100-meter dash, and picked up silver in the triple jump.

His best event is typically the high jump, however, he struggled in that event at state, finishing the day in third place for a bronze medal.

Reifenrath had another stellar day at State, claiming gold in the 100, 200 and 400 with an all-class gold runner-up finish in the 400. 

The Cedar Catholic junior now has seven State Track medals and four State Track gold medals. 

Cedar Catholic Coach Chad Cattau said Reifenrath really pushes herself, so he wasn’t surprised she found so much success at State.

“I know she had goals of winning the all class gold in all three of the sprints, and she was very close in all three.  I am so proud of her for winning that gold in the 200 for two straight years,” he said. “ I am sure she has already set her sights on another one next year.”
