Man, step son facing felony charges

HARTINGTON — A Crofton man and his step son are both facing felony charges stemming from an incident in July.

Daniel G. Schroeder, 74, Crofton, appeared in Cedar County Court last week and waived a preliminary hearing while his step son, Ronald Galvan III, 45, Yankton, S.D., will have his chance to be heard at a preliminary hearing next week.

The victims in the case allegedly went to Schroeder’s residence to exchange money and catalytic convertors for one of Schroeder’s vehicles. Schroeder allegedly went into the residence to retrieve the title and in the meantime, Galvan arrived and blocked the driveway.

According to victim statements, Galvan allegedly fired several shots at the victim’s vehicle, which got stuck going up a hill. The occupants - three men, and two children ages 13 and 11 - fled by foot into a nearby cornfield.

The sheriff’s office had taken a theft report from Schroeder the day before that involved some of the same parties. According to court documents, the sheriff’s deputy identified two bullet holes on the vehicle.

Galvan is currently charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm, terroristic threats, second-degree false imprisonment and two counts of committing child abuse intentionally without injury. Schroeder faces felony aiding and abetting and misdemeanor aiding and abetting charges.

Galvan faces a minimum of three years in prison as currently charged, while there is no statutory minimum sentence for Schroeder’s charge.

Both are currently out on bond.
