Lady Bears take care of business
LAUREL — The Laurel-Concord- Coleridge Lady Bears had a bit of a successful week, taking care of Osmond/Randolph back on Jan. 23, 56-29 then taking care of Wakefield, 68-52 before opening play in the Lewis Division of the Lewis and Clark Conference Tournament with a win over Bloomfield on Jan. 27, 61-29.
The win over the Lady Bees put the Lady Bears in the Lewis & Clark semifinals with a date with Wynot on Jan. 30.
The winner of the game with the Lady Blue Devils will advance to the Lewis Division finals on Feb. 5 in Rice Auditorium on the campus of Wayne State College.
The Lady Bears took a 16-11 advantage after the opening eight minutes with the Lady Bees and they extended the lead to 26-16 at the intermission.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge put the game away in the third, outscoring Bloomfield 22-6 to arrive in the fourth quarter with a lead of 48-22.
Tali Erwin led the Lady Bears with 16 points as four LCC players finished in double figures.
Kaida Eriksen tossed in 14, Carlie Kvols added 11 and Mallory Eriksen had 10.
Lainey Schutte added 10 rebounds and Rena Rasmussen pulled down seven missed shots.
On Jan. 25, the Lady Bears defeated Wakefield by the 16-point final score.
Laurel-Concord-Coleridge got off to a rather slow start against the Lady Trojans and trailed by four, 17-13, at the end of the first quarter.
A basket by Rasmussen inside and a steal and lay up by Erwin made it 25-19 in favor of the Lady Bears with 2:41 left before the half.
Wakefield’s Jordan Metzler answered with a 3, but Mallory Eriksen took a pass from her sister, Kaida and scored before Kaida nailed a long ball of her own and the teams went to the break with LCC in front, 29-22.
Laurel-Concord- Coleridge would widen the lead in the third when Erwin drove the lane and scored at the end of the frame and the Lady Bears enjoyed a 49-34 advantage heading into the final eight minutes.
Rasmussen, who would finish with 28 points, scored on a pass from Carlie Kvols with 1:07 left in the game then finished the night with a drive in the lane for two to get to the 68-52 final score.
Kaida Eriksen finished with 15 points and Mallory Eriksen tacked on 14.
Against the Lady Hawks, Laurel- Concord-Coleridge got out to an 11-7 lead at the end of the first period then blew the game open in the second stanza, outscoring Randolph/Osmond 15-4 to head to the halftime locker room up 26-11.
Erwin led three Lady Bears in double digits with 15 points in the game, Rasmussen added a dozen and Kaida Eriksen chipped in 10.
The Lewis Division finals are scheduled for Feb. 5 with a thirdplace game scheduled for Feb. 2 at the highest seeded participant in the contest.
The Lady Bears will close out their regular season on the road with a trip to Norfolk to take on Lutheran High Northeast on Feb. 6 and to Wisner, to take on the Lady Gators on Feb. 8.
