Gloria Jean was born Aug. 23, 1947, to Eugene and Doris (Kiepke) Sohler in Yankton, S.D. She was the eldest of four siblings, Chuck, Cindy and LaMont. Gloria attended school and graduated from Laurel Public School, Laurel. Gloria worked as a bookkeeper at the bank in Laurel until she married Gaylen Brummels April 6, 1968. From that time forward, her life was about farm and family. Gloria assisted with the farming and bookkeeping, in addition to maintaining a household and raising children. Gloria and Gaylen had five children, Brenda Jean Tyndall, Patricia Ann Gall, Carol Lee Stewart, John David Brummels and Melissa Kay Doerr.
Gloria loved the farm dearly, including being outdoors, maintaining a large garden and spending time caring for animals. She felt a deep affinity for animals, whether that was raising orphan rabbits, adopting strays, or tending her cattle. Gloria enjoyed gardening and canning the produce she raised. She always had fresh baked cookies to share with her kids, grandkids and friends. She was also a caring person who had a strong desire to help others. After the death of her husband Oct. 19, 2001, and her son, John, Aug. 5, 2003, Gloria began caring for children- babysitting both grandchildren and children from the neighborhood. One of her greatest joys was being “grandma” and playing with children.
Gloria is survived by her four children and spouses, Brenda and Joel Tyndall, Hartington; Patt and Richard Gall, Tripp, S.D.; Carol and Dennis Stewart, Avon, S.D.; and Melissa and Justin Doerr, Plainview; grandchildren, Courtney Stewart, Katie Stewart, Cassie Stewart, Sophia Gall, Wyatt Doerr, Dani Doerr, Connor Doerr and Barrett Doerr; great-grandson, Deacon Smith; her mother, Doris Sohler, Laurel; siblings, Chuck Sohler, Laurel; Cindy Taylor, Concord; Lamont Sohler, Freeman, S.D.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were her family.
She was preceded in death by her father, Gene; husband, Gaylen; son, John; granddaughter, Aimec; her mother-in-law, Lois; aunts, Altrude Olsen, Dorothea Huether, Doreen Tim, Helen Graning and Ruth Keipke; and her paternal and maternal grandparents.
