Cedar girls drop OT thriller to eventual champs
LINCOLN — The Cedar Catholic Lady Trojans got off to a good start at last week’s Class D1 Girls State Basketball Tournament.
The Cedar girls got out front and stayed there to defeat South Platte 46-37 in Wednesday’s State Tournament opener.
Senior stand-out Brynn Wortmann paced the offense against South Platte, pumping in 19 points on the day. She earned most of the team’s first quarter points. The Lady Trojans went up 10-2 when Wortmann took a nice dish and drove the lane for two.
Brooklyn Kuehn also hit for double figures with 14.
Cedar then battled Weeping Water toe-to-toe in the State Semifinals at the Pinnacle Bank Arena.
The Lady Trojans fell behind in the fourth quarter, but Brynn Wortmann swiped the ball and went coast to coast for a layup to knot the contest at 45-45 late in regulation.
Cedar had its chances in the overtime but the Indian defense stepped up at the right moment, and Weeping Water hit its free throws to squeak out the one-point win.
The Lady Trojans were led against Weeping Water by Brooklyn Kuehn, who produced a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
