Cedar County speech teams bring home state medals

KEARNEY — All four of the Cedar County high school speech teams that competed last week at State brought some impressive hardware home.

Hartington-Newcastle, which has several state titles on its resume, added some more state speech hardware to the trophy case with a state runner-up trophy in Class C2 and a state championship with its Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Isaac Bruning, Carsen Hopping, Parker Hopping, Reece Morten and Bennet Sievers. Wynot’s Oral Interpretation of Drama team of Trystan Heimes, April Folkers, Peyton Wieseler, Jack Kuchta and Colin Wieseler earned gold in the Class D1 division with their reading of ‘A Series of Unfortunate Events.’

The Cedar Catholic High School speech team came back from Kearney with an individual title in hand and a lot of pride in their efforts.

Grace Kleinschmit is the Class C2 serious prose state champion, following her performance in “Bella Rose,” about a girl an addiction to blood.

Kleinschmit also performed in poetry and took fourth place for “The Crucifixion: A Mother’s Perspective.”

Randolph High school’s Alex Heiman and Tyson Junck placed first at State Speech in duet acting with a script called “Abbott and Costello.”

Heiman was also named runner-up in serious prose and Junck was runner-up in humorous prose. For a third medal, Heiman placed fifth in poetry.

The two boys earned enough points to place Randolph third in the D1 State competition.
