1959: Neighbors turn out to help Heimes in time of need

HARTINGTON — Frances Anderson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Anderson, was named valedictorian at Hartington Public High School for the 1948-49 school year.

HARTINGTON — Five new instructors have been hired to teach at Hartington Public Schools for the 1959-60 school term.
Ten instructors are returning and replacements have been found for all but three positions. Seven teachers are not returning.
Mrs. Mildred Ready, former Hartington resident now teaching at Shoshoni, Wyo., will be the new homemaking instructor.
Other new instructors are as follows: Dwight Williamson, Wayne; Mrs. Dwight Williamson, Wayne; Mary Jessen, Bloomfield; and Janet Fuelberth, Stuart.

RANDOLPH — Three two-story brick buildings were destroyed Sunday night as a spectacular fire roared out of control in the Randolph business district.
Destroyed were the Cornhusker Café, the Roxy Theatre, which was recently renovated; and the Miller Grocery Store, one of the town’s largest food stores.
Firemen were able to keep the blaze from spreading to the Hartz Pharmacy and Harold’s Tavern, but both suffered extensive smoke damage.

HARTINGTON — Mayor Harold Martindale made City department head appointments and council assignments for the coming year.
All present personnel were reappointed.
The appointments are: City Attorney – P.H. Robinson City Clerk – Leon Carlson City Treasurer – W.H. Pohle City Physician – Dr. F.P. Dorsey Police Chief – M.C. Whitney Water and Street Superintendent – Ed Dendinger Auditorium Custodian – Anton J. Kuchta Airport Board – V.E. Rossiter, C.E. Haley, Olof Klanderud Park Board – P.H. Robinson, John Thielen Council assignments are: Streets and Alleys – O’Meara and Wintz Finance – Wintz and Zimmer Auditorium – Hahn and O’Meara Water – Zimmer and Hahn Zimmer was elected president of the city council. He succeeds Wintz, who served the past year.

HARTINGTON — Approximately 20 neighbors and friends of Edwin Heimes gathered at his farm to plow his fields for spring planting. Using 17 tractors, the men burned off and plowed 90 acres.
Assisting with the work were Daniel Eickhoff, Harold Eickhoff, Joe Sudbeck, Roman Arens, Rudolph Arens, R.J. Arens, Jerome Arens, Dennis Arens, Kenneth Arens, Francis J. Arens, Clarence Rupiper, Cyril Wuebben, Daniel Wuebben, Marcus Thoene, Gerhard Lammers, Claude Schulte, Richard Schulte, Ed Lange, Rudolph Hochstein and Gerald Steffen.
