Cedar running attack goes wild against Wayne
HARTINGTON - Cedar Catholic rebounded from an opening-season loss last week with a resounding 47-6 win over Wayne here Friday night at Russ Hochstein Field to earn the Trojans their first win of the young season.
Cedar Catholic was coming off a loss to Boone Central, while the Blue Devils were beaten by Omaha Roncalli Catholic 31-12 in the opening week of the season.
The Trojans scored early and often, making the second half fly by, by implementing the 35-point continuous clock from the first kickoff of the final 24 minutes.
“We had a great week of preparation, the kids weren’t real happy with the way we played last week, so they were focused and ready to go,” Cedar Catholic coach, Chad Cattau said. “We hadn’t played Wayne since 1993 and they are a conference team, that makes it a little more special.”
Cedar Catholic went up 35-0 by the halftime whistle and extended the advantage to 47-0 in the final frame before Wayne got on the scoreboard with 6:43 left in the contest.
“Cedar Catholic is really good and a really good program, probably the epitome of high school football in northeast Nebraska,” Wayne head coach Hayden DeLano said.
“We played really hard here tonight, but we just made too many mistakes to beat a team like Cedar Catholic,” DeLano said. “I told the guys we played hard we just need to clean some things up and make the other team earn whatever they get, we are giving the effort, we just need to do the little things and win some games.” Trojan freshman, Micah Cattau, who finished the night with 117 yards on his 14 carries, opened scoring on the evening as he cashed in on a 9-yard blast to the end zone to cap off a 6-play, 55 yard drive and after a Bodie Hochstein extra point kick, Cedar Catholic was up 7-0 with 8:48 left in the opening quarter.
Just over six minutes later, the Trojans were in the end zone again.
Senior signal-caller, Braeden Reifenrath hit Nolan Becker who hauled in the aerial and ran 47 yards to pay dirt and with 2:49 left in the first, the Trojans were up 14-0.
“We were pretty upset with the way we played last week so we were really ready for this game tonight,” Reifenrath said. “We wanted to get out here and show what we could do, show what we are made of. We did that and now we just need to keep things going for the rest of the season.”
It was more of the same in the second period.
Breiton Whitmire found the end zone with 10:41 left before the half on a 3-yard run to make it 21-0, then scored again from the 9-yard line just over a minute later to make it 28-0.
He would finish his evening with 82 yards on just five carries and scored three times.
Easton Hochstein scored with 2:50 left before the intermission on an 8-yard scamper to set up the running clock in the second half.
In the third, Cedar Catholic extended the advantage to 41-0 on a 30-yard Whitmire run through and around the Blue Devils to make it 41-0 with 7:15 left in the third quarter then just under 90 seconds into the final 12 minutes, Easton Hochstein was over the goal line again, this time from five yards out, and the Trojans were up 47-0.
Wayne got off the shutout snide with a 15-yard run from Taven Ocampo with 6:43 left in the game and after the extra point kick was missed, the final score was set.
“It was good to get back on the field and play well after last week,” Cattau said. “But we need to play like this every week, our schedule demands we are ready each and every game.”
Cedar Catholic is set to take its 1-1 record to an afternoon game right here in Hartington against a 2-0 Archbishop Bergan team from Fremont next week.
“They’re going to spread us out, so we’ll have to get ready for that,” Cattau said. “We’ll get back to work and be ready to go.”
Archbishop Bergan defeated Conestoga in its opening game 41-14 and defeated Ponca 34-20 Friday.
