Report gives options for future water system expansion

HARTINGTON — Water was on the minds of City Council members Monday night.

The Hartington City Council reviewed a report on the city’s recent water quality issues and reviewed a report on future water system expansion proposals.

Water testing in late October and early November showed E. coli in the water system, forcing local residents to boil water before consuming it.

After cleaning the system and running several more tests, everything was declared safe again Nov. 14.

A Nov. 20 state inspection made several recommendations to make sure the system stays safe and operating correctly.

The Council also heard a report Monday about possibly expanding the city water system.

Councilman Cody Christensen said JEO Engineering was asked to do a report after Utilities Manager Pat Guy noted the water system was not operating at full capacity.

JEO engineer Dale Bohac presented the Council with a report his company has been working on since last spring.

The report details the city's current water system, water usage, well inventory and well efficiency.

The report also showed that Hartington has 792 water users and 98 fire hydrants.
