Cornelius H. Schmit
FREMONT — Cornelius H. Schmit, 86, Fremont, died Nov. 2, 2018, at Wisner Care Center, Wisner. Visitation was Tuesday, with a Knights of Columbus Rosary, at Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont. Visitation will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m., Nov. 7, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fremont. The Rev. Fathers Walter Nolte, Roger Schmit and Stan Schmit will officiate. Burial with Military Honors will be at Calvary Cemetery, Fremont. Arrangement are under the direction of Moser Memorial Chapel, Fremont. Cornelius was born Nov. 21, 1931, at McLean, to Cornelius J. and Gertrude (Billerbeck) Schmit. He was raised in the Randolph area and farmed there. He served in the U.S. Army from Feb. 25, 1953-Dec. 22, 1954, during the Korean War. Cornelius married Lucille Aschoff Aug. 27, 1957, in Randolph. He returned to farming after the service, moving to Arlington in 1984 and working at Rhea Cattle Company. They moved to Fremont in 1992. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, Fremont, Knights of Columbus Council #1497, and V.F.W. Post #8332 of Arlington. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lucille; sons, Richard (Sara) Schmit, Fremont; Stephen (Susan) Schmit, North Platte; and Mark (Robyn) Schmit, Eureka, Mo.; daughters, Mary Jo (Charlie) Ware of Lawrenceville, Ga.; Vonda (John) Walker, O’Fallon, Ill.; and Joni (Shawn) Mattingly, Bennington; son-in-law, John Davin, Wildwood, Mo.; brothers, Henry (Carolyn) Schmit, Osmond; Father Roger Schmit, Conception, Mo.; Jerome “Jerry” (Pat) Schmit, Norfolk; and Norbert (Pat) Schmit, Grove City, Pa.; sisters, Ann McHugh, Royal, Iowa; Lucille Knievel, Norfolk; and Rita Aschoff, Osmond; and 14 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Michelle Davin; brother and sister-in-law, Vincent and Shirley Schmit; and sisters, Sister Barbara Schmit and Sister Lucretia Schmit. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be directed to St.
