Wynot faces a tough task at Falls City
FALLS CITY - Wynot will be traveling in the first round of the playoffs to face No. 5 seed Falls City Sacred Heart on Thursday night.
It is the eleventh straight year that Blue Devils football has made the playoffs.
Big Blue will be challenged by a team that did not lose until the final week of the playoffs. Falls City Sacred Heart lost to Johnson-Brock 52-46 on the road last week. Johnson-Brock is a No 2 seed in the bracket.
Wynot and Falls City have no common opponents, and head coach Steve Wieseler says this can make it difficult to scout the opponent.
“Generally when playing in the state playoffs all you really can do is watch film. It is hard to see their actual speed and size on film so it can be somewhat difficult to get a true read on a team.”
And it can be hard to read on this team. FCSH does not use MaxPreps or Hudl to report stats and scores online. Researching articles online does not get much farther, as game recaps can be difficult to find.
A preview story from before the season by the Omaha World-Herald notes a trio of returning offensive starters were expected to lead the team. This included Jake Hoy, Del Casteel, and three-year starting quarterback Drew Bippes.
“They have a talented quarterback, a couple receivers, and a very solid running back,” said Wieseler. “They have a lot of balance.”
Wynot has some balance themselves, with quarterback Landon Wieseler leading the team in passing yards and rushing yards. He is closely followed in rushing yards by Nate Wieseler, who leads the team in receiving yards.
This is a story of two rather different head coaches as well. Steve Wieseler took the reins this summer to fill in for Steve Heimes who is serving overseas. Wieseler has previously found tremendous success coaching the girls' basketball team. FCSH head coach Doug Goltz earned his 300th win at the beginning of the season, and Goltz has also found success coaching the school’s boys’ basketball team.
This game will come down to the kids on the field though, and Wieseler knows success on Thursday will all start with a good week’s practice.
“Our motto this week will be to prepare and have a great week of practice and expect to win the game on Thursday by playing a complete game and playing hard to the whistle on every play by every player.”
Wynot travels to Falls City Sacred Heart to play the first round game on Thursday at 7 p.m.
