Wildcats earn sweep over Wynot

HARTINGTON - Wynot traveled to Hartington-Newcastle last Tuesday for the rivalry’s first showdown of the year. HNS would sweep Wynot on Parents Night on the home court, 25-22 25-18 25-14, for a decisive third straight victory.

The two teams had the opportunity to face off at the Wynot Tournament earlier this season, but HNS suffered its lone loss of the season so far to Crofton and played Bloomfield in the consolation game instead.

The Lady Wildcats’ composure kept the team in control through the three sets, even when Wynot had a small lead or the score was close. HNS coach Leigh Haselhorst says her team has done a good job of not falling behind in matches this year.

“I think my team this year does a good job of not letting a team get on a run. They will stop it and make adjustments themselves, but I will always tell them to go back to the basics.”

Back to the basics worked, with the HNS defense putting up a mighty show. Five different Lady Wildcats finished with 10 or more digs. 

Libero Willa Scoville led the team with 24, while Abbe Morten’s 17, Kayden Jueden’s 16, Autumn Lammers’ 10 and Liby Lange’s 10 contributed to the success. HNS 82 digs on the night were two less than Wynot’s 84.

Scoville may be the libero this year, but that was Lammers position last season. Haselhorst says the experience has really shown an advantage on defense.

“I have to give major props to both Willa and Autumn because Autumn was very selfless when we talked to her about making the switch. She was all for it because she actually liked playing right back defense and wants an opportunity to play right front as well. I think single-handedly our defense won the game for us tonight. We had multiple players in double digits for digs. They just get the job everywhere.”

Jueden led HNS at the net with 13 kills, and she had strong support from Belle Harms and Abbe Morten, who finished with 11 and 10 respectively. 

HNS controlled the tempo most of the match. Wynot held a few early leads during sets but never were able to pull away for a significant lead.

“We were a little out of it tonight,” said Wynot coach Tammy Wieseler. “At times we played really well and blocked really well, but then seemed to let up and give up several points in a row. Hartington played really good defense.”

Wynot’s defense was led at the net by Whitney Hochstein with five blocks. As a whole, the Lady Blue Devils earned 10 blocks on the night. HNS finished with three, and Belle Harms earned them all.

Hartington-Newcastle improved to 6-1 on the season, while Wynot earned its first loss to fall to 3-1. The Lady Blue Devils have a break in matches until traveling to Boyd County on Sept. 20th, but Hartington-Newcastle traveled to the Creighton Tournament on Saturday, and then to Bloomfield on Tuesday.
