The Chief ready to serve up burgers, sandwiches and more

HARTINGTON — There’s a new Chief in town.

The Chief — a bar and grill restaurant at 107 E. Main St. — is officially open for business under new ownership.

Katherine Breen and Christian Auch of Fordyce took over ownership earlier this year.

The business underwent some major cleaning and some minor remodeling with new tables and chairs and a fresh coat of paint - before it opened to the public Monday.

The couple also own The Boondocks bar and restaurant in Fordyce, but you’ll find different fare at The Chief, Breen said.

“It’s a completely different menu but one thing that will also be the same is our handpattied burgers,” she said.

The list of appetizers, sandwiches, burgers and salads include several different specialty burgers and panini sandwiches. Chili cheese fries are a specialty appetizer, she said.

She’s also hoping that the salad with candied walnuts and raspberry vinaigrette will be a hit with those dining at The Chief.

She calls the business a family affair with six of Breen and Auch’s children helping out at the restaurants.

“Our kids are a big part of what we do and why we do it,” she said. “They make it possible. I don’t think I could run two business without them.”

The Chief’s serving hours are 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. for lunch and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. for dinner. The kitchen will stay open until 10 p.m. on weekends.

Some days the restaurant will only be open for lunch and others only open for dinner with Breen and Auch still working out the details.

With a soft opening this week, Breen wasn’t sure what to expect but she was working on getting her first to-go order ready late Monday morning.

“People have heard about us being open and they’re excited,” she said.
