Sylvia M. Kathol
HARTINGTON — Sylvia M. Kathol, 76, Hartington, died May 7, 2018, at Park View Haven Nursing Home, Coleridge. Visitation and a Vigil service were May 14 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, and continued Tuesday one hour prior to services. Mass of Christian Burial was May 15 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating. Burial was at the Beaver Creek cemetery, rural Crofton, following the funeral luncheon. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Pallbearers were her grandsons. Aaron Olsen, Ross Olsen, Zachary Kathol, Taylor Kathol, Griffon Kalin, Sean Kathol, Caleb Kalin and Aiden Cash. Sylvia Marlene Kathol was born April 10, 1942, in Crofton, to Francis and Rosalla (Buschkamp) Janssen. She grew up in the Crofton area and graduated from Crofton High School in 1960. Sylvia received her teaching certificate through the two-year teacher program at Wayne State College. She taught third grade at Pius X in Omaha. Sylvia married Ken Kathol June 11, 1963, in Crofton. She and Ken lived north of Hartington. In 1982, she began cleaning at Holy Trinity School until 1988. Sylvia then began working at Gurney’s Seed and Nursery, Yankton, S.D., for several years. Sylvia attended Wayne State College and received a degree in Human Service Counseling in December 1994. She worked for several years at Well Link, Norfolk. Sylvia moved to Crofton in 1997 and worked at 1st National Bank Service Center, retiring in July 2010. Sylvia was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, its choir and Perpetual Adoration. She also belonged to the Christian Mothers; CDA, where she held several offices; and Ministry of Praise. Sylvia’s Catholic faith was always very important to her. She loved gardening and planting flowers. She always enjoyed attending her children and grandchildren’s activities through the years. Sylvia is survived by her seven children and their spouses, Denise and Mike Olsen, Coleridge; Kevin and Jackie Kathol, Hartington; Terry and Amy Kathol, Hartington; Sharon and Blair Kalin, Hartington; Diane and Brent Haisch, Lincoln; Marcia and Dennis Cash, Lincoln; and Stephanie and Jeff Attema, Meckling, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; one great-grandchild, due to be born in September; two brothers, Roger (Dorothea) Janssen, Crofton, and Larry (Teresa) Janssen, Crofton; and one sister Linda (Chuck) Steffen, Fordyce. She was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Rosalla Janssen.
