Wynot teams are putting together solid seasons
WYNOT - The Wynot Blue Devil and Lady Blue Devil basketball teams are ready to resume their respective seasons, along with everyone else in the Northeast corner of the state.
The Blue Devils are sitting at 8-3 on the season and haven’t played since a Jan. 5 loss to Pender, 35-33 in Pender.
A Jan. 12 game with Winnebago has been cancelled and a makeup game with Cedar Catholic is still up in the air, but Lee Heimes and company are eager to get back on the court.
“You take into account we were behind the eight ball a little coming into the season with state football, then the weather, practices have been hard to come by,” Heimes said. “We are looking to get better at each facet of the game and it will come with time and practice.”
Wynot’s three losses have been to Guardian Angels Central Catholic back on Dec. 7, Crofton in the finals of the Humphrey St. Francis Holiday Tournament on Dec. 30 and the Pendragons.
A couple of the Blue Devil’s better wins are over Bloomfield (8-4) and Wausa (6-5).
A tough date with Plainview is set for Jan. 19 on the road and undefeated Ponca waits in the wings, coming to Wynot Jan. 25, just before the Lewis & Clark Conference Tournament opens on Jan. 27.
The conference tournament runs through Feb. 5 before Wynot finishes the regular season with trips to Wayne and Laurel-Concord-Coleridge sandwiched around a home date with Hartington-Newcastle.
“We want to improve and be playing our best basketball at the end of the season,” Heimes said.
The Lady Blue Devils are 8-2 on the season and defeated Tri County Northeast 48-21 in their last outing back on Jan. 4.
Wynot’s two losses were to 12-1 Guardian Angels Central Catholic on Dec. 7 and West Point-Beemer in the opening round of the St. Francis tournament by four points, 43-39.
The Lady Blue Devils did turn around in the tournament to defeat perennial D2 powerhouse Humphrey St. Francis to snag the third-place trophy.
A three-game monster awaits on the schedule with a home date with Bancroft-Rosalie (9-3) on Jan. 18 followed by road trips to Plainview (8-4) and Niobrara/Verdigre (10-3) on Jan. 19 and 22 respectively.
The conference tournament is set for Jan. 27 through Feb. 5 with the D2-6 SubDistrict Tournament set for Feb. 12, 13 and 15.
