Wynot is hoping for a second straight upset win
WYNOT — Wow, just wow.
Wynot knows how to make a big splash and they did, cannon-balling into the playoff field with a rare, defensive 12-6 upset over Allen.
They were rewarded for the victory with a trip to Johnson-Brock.
“Johnson-Brock is a very good passing team with a sophomore quarterback who is accurate and a very good athlete able to run when needed,” Wynot head coach Steve Heimes said. “Ty Hahn is a wide receiver who is big and physical and is going to play in college. We have similar depth and line play is similar, so it will come down to not making mistakes and turnovers.
“I feel we will be able to pass the ball on them. Our D-line has to play well and make tackles against their quarterback and running back to win the game.”
Well, they proved they can shut down an elite team in the win against Allen.
“It was a defensive game with a lot of tackles for loss for both teams, with field position and turnovers huge aspects in the game,” Heimes said. “Our defense played well. We made tackles in the open field and our D-line played in their backfield most of the night. Offensively, we made plays when we needed them. We ran the ball enough to keep them honest which opened up the pass.”
Now, it’s about parlaying a win that showed Wynot’s potential into a potential stellar playoff reality.
“When we have made turnovers, we have won games,” Heimes said. “Our passing has been our biggest strength this year, with Anthony Haberman as top receiver and Peyton Wieseler as quarterback. Trystan Heimes has made some big catches at tight end which have turned into TDs. Owen Sudbeck at running back had a great game against Wausa.
“Our biggest issue this year was our depth, with 17 kids out and seven being their first year of varsity football. They have gained great knowledge and will be better next year.”
