Wynot girls ready for State
LINCOLN — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils will open the 2019 Class D2 State Tournament against a very familiar foe.
Wynot and Falls City Sacred Heart will square off in the opening round at 5:30 p.m., at Lincoln Northeast High School.
Although, the two squads have never met on the volleyball court, they often meet on the State Tournament basketball court. That meeting has usually been in the state title game, too.
Wynot enters this year’s State Tourney with the second-seed after defeating all but one of the Class D schools they faced this year.
The Lady Devils only lost three games this season — all three to much larger schools. The only Class D school to knock off Wynot was D1’s Neligh-Oakdale, while the Lady Devils also lost to Omaha Concordia and Douglas County West.
The winner of Thursday’s match between Wynot and Falls City will take on the winner of the BDS - Bertrand game.
BDS has been considered one of the best teams in the state all season long. Getting past both Falls City and BDS will be quite a challenge for the Lady Blue Devils.
Wynot is led this season by a balanced group. Wynot has five girls that have slammed home over 100 kills on the season. All five have led the team in kills at one point in the season.
Karley Heimes leads the team in kills with 182. The 5-11 sophomore also went up for 38 blocks — third best on the team.
The Lady Devil defense is led by senior Shaelee Planer, who has come up big for 70 blocks this season. The team is led in digs by Noelle Wieseler. The scrappy senior has 396 digs to date.
Wynot is also known for its strong serving. Senior Katelyn Heine leads the team in that category, serving up 50 ace serves this season.
The Wynot defense will be on the look out for the Irish’s E. Vonderschmidt. The 5-9 sophomore has slammed home 286 kills this season
