Wynot Expos inch above .500 mark
WYNOT — As the South Central League moves into the homestretch of its season, the Wynot Expos moved above .500 with wins over Crofton (4-3) and Tabor (4-3).
At Crofton, the Expos got a strong nine innings of pitching from Jackson Sudbeck, while catcher Dawson Sudbeck backed up his brother with a well-called game behind the plate.
“Jackson attacked hitters and kept them off balance,” Expos coach Lee Heimes said. “Offensively, we had eight hits and capitalized on their mistakes.”
Jalen Wieseler hit a sixth-inning solo home run and the Expos scored three more runs in the top of the eighth inning to take the lead for good.
“Defensively, we made plays throughout the game,” Heimes said.
The home win against Tabor saw Dain Whitmire give up four hits over six innings and allowed two runs.
“He kept attacking the hitters and kept them off balance,” Heimes said. “Defensively, we didn’t have an error.”
Wynot scored three runs early to see Tabor tie the game in the sixth frame, but in the ninth, Jalen Wieseler hit a solo homer to secure the win.
Jalen Wieseler pitched 2.2 innings in relief to earn the win.
“Keys to the week were our pitching and good defense,” Heimes said. “We were consistent in those two areas. We came away with some timely hitting and found different ways to score. Our next step is to continue to be consistent in all three phases of the game.
Wynot played Lesterville late Sunday and had a non-league game against Garretson. They wrap up district play with games against the Yankton Tappers, Thursday and a game against Irene Sunday.
