Wynot cruises to an easy 2-0 start
WYNOT — Two big wins last week pushed Wynot to a 2-0 start on the new boys’ basketball season.
The Blue Devils won their opening game of the 2020-21 season Thursday when they defeated the Bloomfield Bees, 41-27.
They then took on Winside Friday, earning a lopsided 53-11 decision.
Both offenses struggled to score consistently in Thursday’s season opener.
It was the Blue Devils’ defense that helped them to pick up the win. Wynot’s man-to-man pressure defense held the Bees to single digit scoring in every quarter.
The Bees’ Gabe Lauck carried the scoring load with his game-high 17 points.
Wynot got a balanced attack, led by Garrett Lange with his nine points. Anthony Haberman finished with eight points and Trystan Heimes chipped in with seven points.
Neither team shot free throws well, as Bloomfield was 5-19 while Wynot went 5-14 from the charity stripe.
Bloomfield got four points from Gabe Lauck in the opening quarter but Wynot countered with a 3-pointer by Trystan Heimes and a basket each from Colin Wieseler, Garrett Lange and Anthony Haberman to take an early 10-6 lead.
Lauck had the Bees only two field goals in the second quarter. Wynot got a trey by Peyton Wieseler and a bucket each from Trystan Heimes and Anthony Haberman to stretch their lead to 20-11 at halftime.
Wynot’s full court pressure continued to bother the Bees on offense in the third frame. Gabe Lauck hit a pair of baskets in close and Mason Mackeprang also scored from the low block for Bloomfield.
Wynot’s offense slowed until late in the period as Colin Wieseler came off the bench to drain a 3-pointer and Trystan Heimes and Anthony Haberman each hit baskets in the paint to give Wynot a 29-18 advantage going into the final period.
In the final quarter, Lauck added five more points to his totals, but Wynot went on a 12-9 run led by five points from Garrett Lange and a trey by Jack Kuchta as the Blue Devils earned th 41-27 win.

The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 Friday as they cruised to a 53-11 win over Winside.
For the second night in a row the Blue Devil defense shut down their opponents, forcing them into multiple turnovers and struggles all night on the offensive end.
Anthony Haberman led the way for Wynot, hitting for 18 points, with 16 of them coming in the first half. The Blue Devils also got seven points each from Dylan Heine and Peyton Wieseler and five points each from Trystan Heimes and Garrett Lange.
Winside was led by Dean Kruger with five points.
Wynot opened fast behind nine points from Anthony Haberman and a trey by Colin Wieseler to help forge a 20-5 lead at the end of first quarter.
In the second period, the Blue Devils kept the pedal to the metal with a 20-0 run. Haberman and Carson Wieseler hit 3-pointers and Trystan Heimes had a conventional three points to add the Devils’ cause.
Coach Heimes would call off the dogs in the third quarter.
Wynot got a pair of baskets from Dylan Heine. Winside’s lone bucket came from Austin Nelson.
In the fourth quarter, Pat Behmer and Dominic Reed hit a basket each for Winside. Wynot got a trey from Peyton Wieseler making the final margin 53-11.
The Blue Devils travel to West Point Guardian Angels Thursday and host Osmond next Friday.
