Wynot boys aiming for fourth straight trip to State
WYNOT - The Blue Devils are ready to start another basketball season.
The team looks to travel to Lincoln for the fourth straight year, aiming for another State Tournament appearance.
Last year, Wynot went 14-10 on the season, losing to Riverside in the first round.
Head Coach Lee Heimes says the team’s two leading scorers from last year are back again this season, and says the team looks to build something special this year.
“We will just keep improving as a team, working on our chemistry, understanding what everyone’s strengths are, and just get better day by day,” said Heimes.
Nate and Landon Wieseler are the two top leading scorers from last season. Nate edged out Landon by six points, scoring 217 points for 10.3 points per game average. Landon scored 211 and averaged just over 10 points.
“We have two returning starters from last year, and at least three or four guys that were major contributors,” said Heimes. “Our top two scorers are back this year too.”
Nate and Landon are the returning starters, and they are joined by seniors Ethan Hochstein and Aydon Tramp, junior Hunter Heimes, and sophomores Anthony Haberman, Trystan Heimes, and Peyton Wieseler for a total of eight returning letter winners.
This will be Heimes’ 20th year coaching the basketball team at Wynot. He has a career record of 280-146 and has led Wynot to seven of the team’s eight appearances at the state tournament. His resume also includes a state championship in 2013 and two third-place finishes in 2012 and 2017.
Wynot starts the season hosting Bloomfield on Thursday. The team then travels to Winside on Friday.
