UNL Extension works with youth at Hartington, Randolph libraries

HARTINGTON — Nebraska Extension is excited to team up with Lied Randolph and Hartington Public libraries for programs this fall.

During September, Cara Wiebelhaus, Cedar County 4-H Assistant, presented Tree Jubilee. Children learned about the naming of Cedar County, the differences between common tree leaves, and how to make art by using only a leaf, paper, and a crayon.

With Randolph kindergarten and first grade, they read the book “Little Acorn,” which talks about the life cycle of an oak tree.

With third grade and older in Hartington, they went through stations with different types of trees and asked a series of questions with yes or no answers to figure out what type of tree they were looking at.

In October, children at both libraries were putting their memory and investigation skills to the test with Animal Track ID, where children play a tracking memory game and make their own track to take home.

In November, children will do a hands-on activity to “gather food,” while learning about animal adaptations. Participants will also be challenged with a game to see if they can make it through seasonal migration.

This program will be hosted by Lied Randolph Library Nov. 28, and Hartington Public Library Nov. 30.
