Trio of wrestlers survive SubDistricts
Hochstein becomes all-time wins leader
OAKLAND — A trio of local wrestlers still have a shot at this month’s State Tournament.
There was no doubting the effort and intent of the Cedar Catholic wrestlers in last weekend’s SubDistrict tournament.
The top four grapplers in each weight class advance to this week’s District Tournament in Battle Creek.
Kerby Hochstein - at 132-pounds - rolled to a 3-0 record and earned a SubDistrict title.
He avenged an early-season loss in the finals by getting a first-period pin, and with that win became the school all-time career wins leader with 133.
At 160-pounds Conner Hochstein went 2-1, finishing second in his weight class and will move on to the District meet with a chance to finish his season once again in Omaha, which he did a year ago.
Despite going 0-2, 126-pounder Cole Steffenson will be District bound, taking a 28-23 record to Battle Creek.
“Cole will not only be looking to punch his ticket to Omaha next week, but he is also one pin away from the school’s single-season pin record,” Bartling said.
Other results included Keegan Carl (106) who went 0-2 and finished the year with a 25-22 record.
“Keegan was much improved from last year when he only captured 11 wins,” Bartling said.
Tavious Pinkleman also went 0-2 and finished his season early with only three wins.
“Tavious is a freshman who is just starting to learn the sport and definitely ready to come back strong next year,” Bartling said.
Nash Albers (145) went 0-2 and ended the season with 11 wins.
“Nash is a great worker and no doubt in my mind will be a contender next season,” Bartling said.
Kale Korth also finished the day at 0-2 as the 152-pounder wrapped up his freshman campaign with 11 wins.
“Kale is a hard worker in the room, and we look forward to seeing him on the mat next season,” Bartling said.
Kerby and Conner Hochstein will both be seeded fourth at the District meet and Bartling believes both will have a shot to advance to State.
“Cole will have a tougher road, but with his ability to take any kid to the mat he’s got a very good chance at disrupting the bracket,” Bartling said. “This season has been filled with ups and downs, but really our key to success has been having a good number of older kids on the team. That leadership and their experience has been great and that has really helped these younger kids gain confidence each week.”
