Three Cedar County Teams Survive Through Subdistricts
Cedar, HNS, and Wynot play Saturday in the District Finals
LINCOLN - The NSAA released District pairings and site information for District volleyball matches on Saturday. Area teams Cedar Catholic, Hartington-Newcastle, and Wynot all won Subdistrict games and are now one game away from qualifying for the state tournament.
Cedar Catholic defeated Ponca in three straight sets on Tuesday night in Wayne to punch the Trojans ticket. Cedar will play in the C2-5 District Final as the 5 seed against 12 seed Burwell. That game will take place at Boone Central High School in Albion at 6 pm on Saturday.
A win for Big Red would mark three straight state tournament berths. Cedar Catholic has been a total of nine times, including two championships in 1989 and 2012 and runner-up in 2010 and 2017.
Hartington-Newcastle swept North Central on Tuesday night in Creighton to win the subdistrict and advance to the D1-6 District Final. HNS is the 11 seed and faces 6 seed Diller-Odell at Columbus High School on Saturday at 5 pm.
Hartington-Newcastle has not qualified for the state tournament since the merger. Hartington High School has made it once in 2003. Newcastle High School made it three times in 1998, 2004, and 2005.
Wynot also had a sweep in the Subdistrict Finals to advance to the District Finals game. Wynot topped Winside in Ponca on Tuesday. The Lady Blue Devils will travel to Ord as the 4 seed to face 13 seed Hyannis on Saturday at 6 pm.
Wynot last went to the state tournament in 2016 and has been a total of five times, including 1984, 1997, 2011, 2014, and 2016.
The three area teams are one win away from making it to the state tournament in Lincoln. The eight-team tournament would start on Thursday, November 8 and run through the weekend with championship matches being played on Saturday.
