Seniors blast Randolph in tune-up for Area Tournament
RANDOLPH - The Hartington Post 4 Seniors pounded out 15 hits in just three innings of baseball as well as taking advantage of five Randolph errors to roll past Randolph 22-0 here in recently scheduled game before the teams head into Area action next week.
After Post 4 made a disappointing first-round exit in the Ralph Bishop League Tournament back on June 25, 14-13 to Crofton, Hartington left little doubt of the outcome of this contest from the second pitch of the game.
Breiton Whitmire smacked a double to left field on the second pitch to open the top of the first inning, a frame that would see Post 4 cross the plate 11 times.
Koby Detelefsen hit a sacrifice fly to score Whitmire after Dylan Taylor got aboard on an error and Jaxson Bernecker was hit by the Randolph pitcher.
A Tyan Baller walk and a Dan Puppe single to left scored Taylor, a single by Weston Heine scored Bernecker and a Carson Arens single later in the inning scored Puppe and Heine.
With the score already up to 6-0 with an out in the first, Hartington added five runs with two outs in the inning.
Throw in the fact that Lukas Wortmann and Puppe combined to keep the Randolph bats hit-less in three innings and it all adds up to 22-0.
Whitmire had three hits in the game, including a couple of doubles, Detlefsen and Braeden Reifenrath also slapped two-baggers on the evening.
Jaelen Lammers and Arens each scored three times, Whitmire, Taylor, Bernecker, Baller, Puppe, Heine and Sam Wiebelhaus each crossed the plate twice.
Post 4 is scheduled to play another game against Randolph on July 13 in Hartington with first-pitch set for 7 p.m.
Hartington will host the Class C Area 1 Tournament July 21-26. Creighton-Bloomfield-Plainview, Crofton, Ponca, Stanton and Wisner-Pilger will join Post 4 in Area 1.
The Class C Senior state tournament will be hosted by Gordon-Rushville July 29 through August 2.
