Rolfes helps keep NWU's national title streak intact
LA CROSSE, WISCONSIN - Aspen Rolfes didn’t expect to be competing for a National Championship in her freshman year of college at Nebraska Wesleyan University, but on Saturday that is exactly what her and the other three girls on the 1600 meter relay team were doing.
Rolfes had joined an immensely successful track program, one that had won three straight entering the Fall. She was soon added to the 1600 meter relay team that was already a two-time defending outdoor national champion. She quickly found her role though and proved she belonged on this premiere relay team.
“It was really exciting,” said Rolfes. “At first, being on the team I was a little nervous because they had won all the times before that, but once we started those went away. I didn’t feel like a freshman and they didn’t treat me like a freshman.”
During the winter, Rolfes was able to feel what it was like to win a National Championship during the Indoor season, she then was an influential part of the team’s run for a fifth consecutive title at the Outdoor Championships in Wisconsin.
Entering Saturday, the NWU 4x400 relay team was seeded second behind Emory. The top seed outran NWU by nearly three seconds in the preliminary heats, running a 3:45.60 compared to NWU’s 3:48.43.
