Teaching runs in new Wynot teacher's family

WYNOT – Nolan Ostrand realized what he wanted to do in life when he was a junior in high school.

The 2019 Emerson-Hubbard High School graduate always enjoyed social studies classes and sports, so he decided to do what so many family members before him had done — go into teaching.

He is the new Social Studies teacher and junior high sports coach at Wynot Public Schools this year.

'I have a lot of family members that chose the education career path,' he said. 'My mom is a first

grade teacher at Wayne Elementary and any time I meet her former students they talk about how awesome she is and how she impacted their lives.' His grandma taught school at Walthill Public Schools.

'I always enjoy stories she has about her students and how almost anywhere she goes she meets a former student with a story.' Ostrand said. A cousin, Battle Creek Elementary School Principal Curtis Childers, also influenced his

career choice. 'The excitement he has about his students and his school inspired me to want to be like him and have that same excitement wherever I go,' Ostrand said. The 2023 Wayne State College grad got his start in teaching last year when he student taught at Laurel Concord Coleridge.

He also coached at Emerson Hubbard for two years where he helped with junior high football, varsity football, and junior high basketball.
