HARTINGTON — Mercedes Goeden, 92, Hartington, died on May 16, 2024, at the Arbor Care Center, Hartington. Mass of Christian Burial was May 21 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating. Burial was at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington. Pallbearers were Paul Goeden, Chris Goeden, Tom Goeden, Rick Goeden, Keith Goeden and Danny Goeden. Honorary pallbearers were Mercedes’ grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation and a vigil service were Monday. Visitation continued one hour prior to services. Arrangements were under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington. Mercedes Mary Elizabeth was born May 7, 1932, in Bow Valley, to Rudolph and Theresa (Hoebelheinrich) Sudbeck. She grew up near Bow Valley and attended elementary school there. Mercedes married Norman Paul Goeden July 3, 1950, in Bow Valley. After they were married, they lived in Hartington. Mercedes and Norman had nine children – Cary, Rodney, David, Patrick, Mark, Giles, Philip, Paula and Wayne.

When Mercedes was younger, she worked at various jobs. Her final employment was as a nurse’s aide and med-aide for the Hartington Nursing Home, close to 30 years.

Mercedes was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. She was a great cook who loved canning and making homemade sausage. She also enjoyed time at the cabin, mushroom hunting, asparagus hunting, and antique auctions on the weekends, but mostly Mercedes loved spending time with her family.

Mercedes is survived by her seven children, Cary (Jolene) Goeden, Hartington; Rodney (Rose) Goeden, Hartington; David (Rose) Goeden,Yankton, S.D.; Mark (Carla) Goeden, Hartington; Phil Goeden, Syracuse; Paula (Jim) Brummer, Norfolk; Wayne Goeden, Sioux Falls, S.D.; 23 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Luella (Hop) Rothluebber, West Los Angeles, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rudolph and Theresa Sudbeck; husband, Norman, Nov. 2, 1997, at the age of 70; sons, Giles and Patrick Goeden; three brothers, Alvin, Duane and Eugene Sudbeck; one sister, Joni Schneider; grandsons, Matthew and Brad Goeden.
