Marking a big milestone

HARTINGTON — A trio of Hartington businesses will mark important milestones next month.

Big Hair Brewhaus and the Globe Chophouse will both celebrate the completion of their first year in business, while the Cedar County News will mark its 30th year with Rob Dump and Peggy Year as owners and publishers.

All three businesses decided to work together to hold a community-wide anniversary celebration on May 21.

The Hartington City Council Monday granted a special liquor license for the Brewhaus to hold a street dance May 21 on Broadway Avenue between the three businesses. That section of Broadway Avenue will be closed for the event.

The local businesses have been planning the celebration for quite some time.

Cedar County News Publisher Peggy Year said a lot of good things have happened at the Cedar County News in the 30 years the couple has owned and operated the newspaper.

This event will be a great chance for the newspaper to show its appreciation to the community, she said.

"We're very grateful for all of the support we've received over the years," she said. "A newspaper is a very unique business. It takes the support and cooperation of the entire community and region in order to have a successful newspaper, and we've been fortunate to earn the trust and support of the community."

Big Hair Brewhaus owner Brett Wiedenfeld said he is also grateful for all of the community support.

"You never know how things are going to go when you open a new business," he said. "We couldn't be happier with the way the community has responded and for the support they have shown us."

Katelyn Gapinski really took a leap of faith when she purchased the old Globe Clothing Store and transformed it into a steakhouse. The business had some growing pains, but is really gaining a good reputation around the region for its quality food, she said.

The May 21 anniversary celebration will begin at 5:30 p.m., when the Cedar County News will sponsor a free pulledpork feed.

A street dance featuring Casey Rossiter will also take place, beginning at 8 p.m. Besides Rossiter, Chris Cortez, Carly Christensen, Jordan Burns and Mike Dendinger will also perform.

"We've been wanting to show our appreciation for everything this community has done for us over the years," Cedar County News Publisher Rob Dump said. "This just seemed like the best way to reach the most people and have some fun in the process."
