League of Heroes wraps up season at State Tourney
Two local wrestlers earn state titles
GRAND ISLAND - Last March, COVID-19 left the local youth wrestling organization with lots of unfinished business.
Several members of the League of Heroes youth wrestling program had qualified for state wrestling in Grand Island after competing on March 7, 2020. However, as the state began to shut down, it was apparent that the League’s season had come to an abrupt end.
This year, with the uncertainty of COVID, many wrestlers were looking to finish what they had started last season.
Luckily, the League of Heroes wrestling program was able to host its second annual tournament last January.
Outside of new regulations such as limited spectators and extra cleaning, tournaments have commenced as usual. Members of the team have competed across the state at various tournaments ranging from Wayne to Grand Island.
At least one teammate has brought home hardware from each event.
The 50 Heroes continued to grow and succeed under Coaches Eric Becker, John Freeman, and Cameron Schrempp’s guidance.
Since COVID-19 had stopped wrestling in its tracks last season, the trip to Grand Island and the state tournament was that much sweeter.
The League of Heroes had 19 members compete at the state tournament held March 20-21.
Keyan Wickre, Cade Kleinschmit, Grady Lammers, Brody Kleinschmit, Evie Freeman, and Braeden Kleinschmit all fought hard and contributed to the overall team scores.
Evie Freeman and Aiden Schrempp will both compete in April as part of the Nebraska Dual Team at the Heartland USA Elementary National Duals in Council Bluffs, Iowa.
The Heroes had two state champions and several other medalists:
STATE CHAMPION: Aiden Schrempp
STATE GIRLS CHAMPION: Evie Freeman
