LCC competes at State track
OMAHA — The Laurel-Concord-Coleridge Bears and Lady Bears track teams sent three individuals to Omaha’s Burke Stadium for the 2024 Nebraska Track and Field Championships, with Class C competing on May 17 and 18.
Carter Kvols and Preston Rose traveled for the Bears and Tali Erwin represented the Lady Bears at State.
“We had a great track season and especially for these three athletes,” Laurel-Concord-Coleridge coach Shannon Benson said.
“They were all three great leaders for our team and helped us have a great season.”
Erwin grabbed a spot at the State meet in two events, the high jump and the 100-meter hurdles.
She ran the hurdles in 17.04 seconds, but didn’t qualify for the finals, ending up in 21st place, and cleared the bar at 4-feet-11-inches to wind up one spot out of the medals in ninth place.
Aubrey Fujan of Bishop Neumann won the hurdles in 14.98 and Katelynn Kratz from West Holt took the high jump with a best of 5-03.
“Tali is now a two-time State qualifier,” Benson said. “She had a great season and will continue to work hard in hopes of returning to the State meet.”
Rose suffered an injury and was unable to compete at State, but had a great season before getting hurt.
“He had a lot of first-place finishes in a lot of events throughout the season,” Benson said. “He placed first in every 400-meter race he ran this season, which includes the Norfolk Classic, the Lewis and Clark Conference (Meet) and Districts.
“He attended the State meet and was able to see the event and is now more motivated to return than ever. He will continue to heal and will be back better than ever for his senior season.”
Kvols ran the 800 meters in 2:06.74 to place 19th for his final event of his LCC career and to end his second State meet.
“At the end of the day, I was super proud of him for qualifying,” Benson said. “It was a great way to end a very good, very successful track career.”
