Laurel baseball boys win league title
NELIGH — The Laurel 12-and-under Peewee team finished its year with a 15-5 record and as champions of the Quad County League.
The boys started the tournament off as the fourth seed in a 15-team, double elimination tournament.
In game one, they faced off against Summerland and came away 12-2 winners in three innings.
The second round game had the Bears squaring off against the fifthseed Boyd County Spartans.
A hard fought game by the boys earned them a 3-1 victory. The next game paired them against eighth seed Atkinson, which had just knocked off top-seeded Creighton.
The bats were more than ready for the task, and the boys came away with a 16-6 win in four innings, putting Laurel in the winner’s bracket championship game.
This game saw them facing off with a tough Neligh team. Laurel ended up victorious 14-10 and moved to the Championship game.
Laurel was in the driver’s seat going into the next day, as the Neligh one team would have to beat them twice to win the championship.
The first game went in favor of Neligh as they got the victory in a hard fought battle, 7-9. The second championship game started out with the Bears quickly in a 5-0 hole after the top of the first, but they never gave up and battled back to pull within one, 11-10 after four innings.
The Bear defense held strong in the top of the fifth, making some great plays and putting a zero on the board for Neligh.
The bats continued to stay hot for Laurel in the bottom of the fifth, and the boys earned the championship in walk-off fashion, winning 12-11.
