Hoesing returns to Cedar County to guide alma mater
HARTINGTON — Dan Hoesing is looking to finish his education career in the place where his schooling started.
The new president-superintendent of Cedar Catholic said the school and town have changed quite a bit since he graduated in 1975 but that it feels good to come home.
“I’m thrilled to be here,” Hoesing said. “I’m looking forward to getting a better handle on things and get to meet and reacquaint with people after 40 some years of being gone.”
Hoesing and longtime Cedar Catholic teacher and coach Chad Cattau will guide the high school this upcoming academic year. They replace Chris Uttecht who left for an administrative position in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Hoesing is the first lay president-superintendent at the school. Up until now, the Holy Trinity priest held the position.
In announcing the change, Korte said this transition comes at an important time for the Catholic school system.
“The priest-president model will give way to (the) lay president model so that priests can be freed to attend to the family of parishes our present church is calling us to,” he said. “The priests of Cedar corporate parishes will still have an important role to play in our schools. In our planning over the next year, this will be further fleshed out.” Hoesing will also oversee the Cedar Catholic Development Office. Joani Potts has run that office for 28 years, but announced in April she planned to retire this year.
Hoesing was involved in athletics, music and play production during his formative years at Cedar Catholic. He went on to play football for two years at Yankton College and then finished college at Kearney State College.
Hoesing originally pursued a physical therapy degree but ultimately shifted toward coaching and physical education.
His first teaching job was at Tilden’s Elkhorn Valley Schools and then he transferred to Coleridge to work as principal.
His first superintendent job was at Ansley, followed by stints at Alliance, Laurel and, most recently, Schuyler.
When he worked as the Laurel superintendent, he also oversaw Coleridge, Wynot and Newcastle schools - all separate schools with separate school boards. When he was superintendent in Alliance he was also superintendent at Hyannis, 60 miles away.
With much convincing from his wife, Jill, Hoesing retired from Schuyler at the end of the 2022-23 academic year.
