Gary Kieth Kinney

HARTINGTON — Gary Kieth Kinney, 79, Hartington, died Sept. 19, 2018, at the Monarch Hospice House, Lincoln, after a short battle with lung cancer. Visitation was Sunday, from 3-6 p.m., with a Vigil Service at 4:30 p.m., at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington. Visitation began at 9:30 a.m., Monday at the church. Mass of Christian Burial was Sept. 24, at 10:30 a.m., at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, with Rev. Jim Keiter officiating. Troop B Honor Guard from the State Patrol will have honors at Holy Trinity Church. Burial was at 3 p.m., Monday, in St. Michael’s Cemetery, West Point, with Deacon Dave Baumert officiating. Military honors will be provided by the West Point American Legion Post 70, the West Point VFW Post 4912 and the American Legion Riders. The Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, was in charge of arrangements. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Nebraska State Patrol and other Law Enforcement Agencies. Pallbearers are Kenny Meier, Ron Tighe, Judy Janssen and Bill Fitzgerald, all State Troopers, Larry Koranda and Kevin Garvin, Cedar County Sheriff’s office. Gary was born Jan. 29, 1939, at Bloomfield, to Herb Otto and Iola Arlene (Davis) Kinney. He graduated from West Point High School in 1957, and attended Wayne state College, Wayne. Gary served in the United States Air Force from 1962-1966. He married Lois Tingelhoff Oct. 7, 1967, in West Point. Gary joined the Nebraska State Patrol in 1966, and served until 1996. He was the Chief of Police for Hartington from 1997-2001, and worked as a Deputy Sheriff for Cedar County from 2001-2009. Gary was a member of the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, and had a Holy Hour of Adoration for many years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Hartington VFW Post 5283, Am Vets and STAN (State Troopers Association of Nebraska). He was a counselor at the Holy Trinity Youth Camp at Tinturn Monastery from 2003-2006. He loved Nebraska football, traveling and attending all of his kids’ and grandkids’ activities. His favorite saying was Salamat Kaibigan which means “Thank you my friend” in Filipino. Gary is survived by his wife, Lois Kinney, Hartington; five children, Jeff and Becky Kinney, Elkhorn; Kathy and Rob Miller, Lincoln; Ann and Doug Burch, Gretna; Brian Kinney, Westminster, Colo.; and Mark and Erin Kinney, Elkhorn; 12 grandchildren; a sister, Sherry and Bill Rasmus, West Point; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister, Kathy Kinney; and a brother, Robert Hoesing. Memorials are preferred to the Monarch Hospice House in Lincoln
