Dorothy G. Steffen
YANKTON, S.D. — Dorothy G. Steffen, 92, Yankton, S.D., formerly of Hartington, died Sept. 29, 2018, at Avera Sister James Care Center, Yankton, S.D. Visitation will be Friday at the Wintz Funeral Home, Hartington, from 5-8 p.m., with a Vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Saturday, one hour prior to services at church. Mass of Christian Burial will be Oct. 6, at 11 a.m., at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Hartington, with the Rev. Owen Korte officiating. Burial will be at St. Michael’s Cemetery, Hartington. Pallbearers will be Chuck Steffen, Tim Bochholt, Marvin Steffen, David Gentrup, Raymond Spenner and Martin Spenner. Dorothy Gertrude Spenner was born Sept. 7, 1926, in West Point, to Ignatius and Anna (Risse) Spenner. She grew up in West Point and attended West Point Guardian Angels Elementary School. Dorothy married Ralph Steffen Feb. 4, 1948, in West Point. After their marriage, they worked for a farmer in Monterey, for two years, then moved to a farm southwest of Hartington in 1950. She and Ralph retired and moved into Hartington in 1989. She moved to Majestic Bluffs, Yankton, in October 2009, and was a resident of Sr. James Care Center at her death. Dorothy was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, its Ladies Guild, and a member of the Perpetual Adoration. She served as the treasurer of the Cedar Catholic Development. She was a member of the Ministry of Praise, Christian Mothers, and formerly served as the Grand Regent of the Catholic Daughters of America. Dorothy was very active in her parish life and made many altar cloths and banners. She was a former 4-H leader and loved her flower and vegetable garden. She was an expert in crafts and needlework and worked as a skilled seamstress for 25 years. Often her handiwork could be found adorning the interior of Holy Trinity or on an auction table to benefit Cedar Catholic High School. Dorothy is survived by her three children and spouses, John Steffen and Kathy Fimple, Omaha; Paula and Art Rosethal, Omaha; Gene and Donna Steffen, Hartington; five grandchildren, Jeremiah Steffen, Joshua (Michelle) Steffen, Jennifer (Rusty) Kermoade, Jonathan (Brittany) Rosenthal, and Dulcia Steffen (fiancé, Bobby Armstrong); great-grandchildren, Ebony DeBolt; Liliana, Alexander and Charlotte Steffen; Tyler and Carson Rosenthal; Carlie, Gabriela and Annabelle Kermoade; sister, Mathilda (Elno “Doc”) Zikmund; sisters-in-law, Sr. Irma Steffen and Denelda Potts; many nieces, nephews, god children, and other extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ignatius and Anna Spenner; husband, Ralph, on March 2, 2002, at the age of 80; 17 siblings, Joseph, Henry, Rev. Ignatius, Catherine, Anna Steffen, Agnes (Sr. Leovigild), Elizabeth (Sr. Johnitta), Helen (Sr. Marie Paula), Ferdinand, Barbara (Sr. Ann), Rev. Conrad, Paul, Bernard and Frances Bockholt; three half sisters Theresa Gentrup, Mary Gentrup, and infant, Anna.
