Delores A. Lintel

LINCOLN — Delores A. Lintel, 86, Lincoln, died Feb. 13, 2018. No funeral is being planned. A celebration of life will be held in early May at Lintel Park, Lincoln. Details will be released at a later date. Delores A. Foecke was born Feb. 21, 1931, on a farm south of Crofton. She was the fourth of 12 children. As one of the oldest children, she learned responsibility at an early age. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School, Hartington, in 1948, and won a Regent’s Scholarship to the University of Nebraska. Unfortunately, illness in the family prevented her from attending college. Delores married Ferdinand Lintel June 19, 1950. They started a family and moved to Lincoln, with their four children in 1956. Delores worked at home as a typist and then a clerk/typist at Mail Advertising and was the secretary for the president when the company was sold to MetroMedia. Her position was eliminated in 1978. Not one to stay idle, she started making jams and jellies based on family recipes from her mother and grandmother and sold them at local craft shows and later local grocery and gift stores. This venture became Grama’s, Inc. and is still going strong with family members now managing the business. At the same time, she began to babysit her growing bunch of grandchildren, a task she genuinely enjoyed. From 1961-1969, she was the director of the school lunch program for Sacred Heart School. She was successful in obtaining grants for much needed equipment and started the first school breakfast program in Lincoln. Delores was very active in improving her beloved Clinton Neighborhood. She was a founding member of the first neighborhood organization in Lincoln, the Clinton Neighborhood Organization in 1964. She was a leader in organizing the successful opposition to the proposed Northeast Radial, a roadway that would have destroyed the neighborhood. She was the president of the Clinton Neighborhood Organization; a board member of the Legal Aid Society and Catholic Social Services; a founding member and officer of Impact, a community organizing group; a member of the Mayor’s Roundtable and an original member of the Citizen’s Advisory Group; and a member of Lincoln Alliance and Radial Reuse Task Force. She was involved with the Antelope Valley Project and took pride in the end result of that effort. She was a project leader for Project Linus and from 2003-2012 distributed more than 27,000 quilts and afghans for children who are ill, have been hospitalized, abused, neglected or traumatized. She was a volunteer train conductor at the Children’s Zoo, a host on Live and Learn, and wrote stories for publication in the Lincoln Journal-Star from her memories of her childhood. In 1987, in recognition of her efforts on the Radial Reuse Task Force and many years working to improve the Clinton Neighborhood, Lintel Park was dedicated at 21st and Holdrege streets. In 2009, she received national recognition in Washington, D.C. when she received the Dorothy Richardson Community Leadership Award from Neighborworks. Delores is survived by her children, Tom (Patti) Lintel, Jim (Maria) Lintel, Michael Lintel and Theresa (Brian) Barry, all in Lincoln; grandchildren, Jeff (Sarah) Lintel, LaVista; Megan (Justin) Brunken, Lincoln; Khara (Emir) Plicanic, Lincoln; Gina (Roy) Furr, Lincoln, Tony Lintel, Lincoln; Nick (Jamie) Lintel, Omaha; Brian Behrens, Overland Park, Kan.; Sarah (Matt O’Donnell )Barry, Chicago, Ill.; Pat (Steph) Barry, Topeka, Kan.; great-grandchildren, Ze Plicanic, Dominic, Oscar and Ramie Furr, Cole and Freya Lintel, Alaina, Lia and Ben Barry and two more on the way; five sisters and one brother; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband of 52 years, three brothers and two sisters.
