Defending state champs fly past Wynot Blue Devils
Humphrey — The Wynot Blue Devils opened their 2020 football season on Friday night as they travelled to do battle with one of the top teams in D-1, the Humphrey St. Francis Flyers. The Flyers used a strong running attack to down the Blue Devils, 56-14.
Tanner Pfeifer led the Flyers offense, as he had a hand in all their scoring drives. Pfeifer rushed for 127 yards and four touchdowns and passed 118 yards and another touchdown. Spencer Engel rushed for the other Flyers score.
Wynot was led on offense by Anthony Haberman, who rushed for 147 yards and two touchdowns.
On defense, Wynot’s Peyton Wieseler and Anthony Haberman each recorded nine solo tackles. Garrett Lange helped out with six solo stops in the game.
The Flyers were led on the defensive side by Justin Leifeld and Karter Welch, with seven and six solo tackles respectively.
“St. Francis is a very polished team for this early in the season and are very deserving of their high ranking. We need to show improvement on both sides of the ball to get to their level,” said Wynot head coach Steve Heimes.
Humphrey St. Francis would get on the scoreboard quickly in this game. The Flyers would score early, as Tanner Pfiefer capped their first drive on a 10- yard touchdown run. Pfeifer hit Austin Leifeld for the PAT and Humphrey led 8-0.
On their next offense set, the Flyers would again score quickly as Haustiyn Fornery would gallop 40 yards to paydirt. Pfeifer would again hit Austin Leifeld for the PAT and the home team lead 16-0.
The Flyers would get the ball right back as they executed a successful onside kick recovery. Three plays later Tanner Pfeifer found Haustiyn Forney behind the Blue Devils’ defense for a 34- yard scoring strike. The Flyers’ lead increased to 24-0.
On the Blue Devils’ next offense possession, they would put together a nice sustained drive. Anthony Haberman capped the drive with a 1-yard plunge over the right side of the line for the touchdown. The PAT run was stuffed and the score stood at 24-6 at the end of the first quarter.
Both teams put up one touchdown each in the second quarter. Humphrey St. Francis cashed in on their scoring drive on a 6-yard scamper by Tanner Pfeifer. Pfeifer found Jaden Kosch open for the PAT pass as HSF increased their lead to 32-6.
Wynot answered that score when Anthony Haberman scrambled under heavy pressure and then connected with Jack Kuchta on a 33-yard scoring bomb. Haberman hit Owen Sudbeck for the PAT cutting the Flyers’ margin to 32-14 at halftime.
The Blue Devil offense would move the ball in the second half but could not score.
Humphrey St. Francis added a pair of scoring drives in the third quarter.
The first came on a one-yard run by Tanner Pfeifer. A Pfeifer to Justin Leifeld PAT pass, his third of the night, pushed their lead to 40-14.
As the period wound down the Flyers would put up a second score in the period on a 30-yard touchdown run by Spencer Engel. This time Pfeifer connected with Jaden Kosch for the PAT ballooning their lead to 48-14.
St. Francis added on a final score in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard run by Tanner Pfeifer. Haustyn Forney ran in the PAT to make the final 56-14 in favor of the Flyers.
Wynot hosts another ranked team Friday when the Bloomfield Bees come calling Friday.
