COLERIDGE — Darrell D. Benson, 90, Coleridge, died April 27, 2024, at Osmond General Hospital, with his family at his side. Memorial services will be May 2, at 11 a.m., at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Coleridge, with the Rev. Marilyn Hasemann officiating. Burial of his cremated remains will be at the Lawn Ridge Cemetery, Coleridge, with military rites by the Coleridge American Legion Post 114 and the American Legion Riders. Urn bearers will be his grandchildren, Colten (Morissa) Benson, Kayla (Jesse) Thoene, and Kennedy (Oscor) Roth. Honorary urn bearers will be Logan and Connor Thoene, Makenna, Cethan, Cheston and Cortland Benson, and Kinleigh Roth. Visitation will be on Wednesday, at church, from 5-7 p.m., and will continue Thursday, one hour prior to services. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Coleridge.

Darrell Donald was born March 8, 1934, in Hartington, to Melvin and Alvena (Grant) Benson. After grade school, Darrell worked on the family farm and worked at Collins Motor, Coleridge. He spent his time farming from 1956 until retirement, and he also worked as a vet helper with H.P. Lortz for over 25 years. Darrell’s sense of duty led him to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1953. He served his country with honor, both in the United States in 1954, and overseas in Germany and France in 1955, a testament to his patriotism and bravery.

In the spring of 1956, he met his lovely wife, Marvel, from Coleridge. Darrell and Marvel were married Aug. 6, 1956. They were blessed with two sons, Alan in 1957, and Curtis in 1970.

Darrell served time in the communities as a board member of the Hartington Golf Course, Coleridge School Board, and the Church Board. Darrell also played baseball in Coleridge for over 20 years, in which he was chosen for many All-Star games over his career. Darrell was known for his love of baseball, but also enjoyed golfing, bowling and fishing. He loved woodworking in the garage, creating endless crafts and pieces out of anything he could find. Darrell and Marvel spent many years wintering in Arizona with friends and family.

Darrell is survived by his wife, Marvel Ann Benson, Coleridge; son, Curtis Edward Benson, and spouse, Janell, Sholes; daughter-in-law, Mary Benson, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Betty Andresen, Hartington; brother, Dean ( Jodi ) Benson, Coleridge; two sisters, Diane Brunk, Colorado, and Darlene ( Norm ) Reynoldson, Albion; grandchildren, Colten and Morissa Benson, Hartington; Kayla and Jesse Thoene, Hartington; and Oscor and Kennedy Roth, Hartington; and seven great-grandchildren, Makenna, Cethan, Cheston and Cortland Benson, Logan and Connor Thoene, and Kinleigh Roth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Alan Benson, Wisconsin; sister, Donna Christenson, St. Edward; and two brothers-in-law, Cecil Andresen and Bob Brunk.
