Darlene P. Burns
LAUREL — Darlene P. Burns, 91, Laurel, died Aug. 19, 2018, at Hillcrest Care Center, Laurel. Visitation will be Wednesday, at United Lutheran Church, Laurel, from 5-7 p.m., with a Prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Thursday, one hour prior to services. Funeral Services will be Aug. 23, at 10:30 a.m., at United Lutheran Church, Laurel, with the Rev. Matt Quanbeck officiating. Burial will be at the Laurel cemetery. Pallbearers will be Darlene’s grandsons, Bob Pigg, Tony Lawyer, Matt Lawyer, Nick Lawyer, Tyler Rager, and Travis Rager. Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home, Laurel. Darlene was born Jan. 1, 1927, in Homer, to Peter and Edith “Pearl” (Green) Kautz. She grew up in Homer and graduated from Homer High School in 1946. Darlene married Clair Pigg June 2, 1946, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Homer. She and Clair lived and farmed northeast of Homer until 1970, when they moved to their farm south of Laurel. Clair died Oct. 21, 1976. Darlene then married Harold Burns Nov. 11, 1978, in Laurel. Darlene and Harold moved into Laurel in 1996. Harold died Aug. 4, 2010. Darlene was a member of the United Lutheran Church and the Ladies Circle. She belonged to several card clubs, loved dancing, bowling, golfing, planting flowers and traveling. While in Homer, she belonged to the Green Thumb Garden Club. Darlene was active in 4H, enjoyed sewing, embroidering, gardening, canning, and raising her own chickens, and she was an excellent cook. She enjoyed having people over to her home, where she loved to decorate and entertain. She was especially proud of her outdoor Christmas display each year. Darlene is survived by her three children, Linda Rager, Mankato, Minn.; Dave (Margie) Pigg, LeMars, Iowa; Scott (Barbara) Pigg, Laurel; daughter-in-law Bernita Pigg, Laurel; step children, Pat (Harley) Reinoehl, Blair; Jean Muller, Omaha; Steve Burns, Omaha; Monte (Linda) Burns, Laurel; Tom (Lori) Burns, Laurel; Betty (Bob) Rager, Emerson; Don (Lori) Burns, Norfolk; Ken (Chris) Burns, Arizona; and Judy (Don) Jorgensen, Randolph; and (including step) 31 grandchildren, 60 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Clair Pigg; husband, Harold Burns; son, Kent Pigg; sister, Genevieve Fitzwilliams; brother, Kermit Kautz; niece/sister, Jacquelyn Pigg; step granddaughter, Nicole Burns; step grandson, Brandon Burns; and step son-in-law, “Skip” Muller.
