County makes plans to build new transit center
HARTINGTON — Plans for a new Cedar County Transit Center are going full steam ahead after Tuesday’s public hearing on the plan met with no resistance from County taxpayers.
Earlier this summer, Cedar County purchased 1.6 acres of land just north of Pomps and just southwest of the Hartington Community Complex. The plan is to put a new 10-vehicle garage and office area up at the site.
The vehicles are currently parked in the old ambulance bay at the Hartington City Hall and on the street adjacent to the City Hall.
The federal government will pay for 80 percent of the cost to construct the new facility.
County Commissioners will be working with RaDec Construction and an Omaha architectural firm to design a building. Once that design is completed, it will then have to be approved by both the Neb. Department of Transportation and the Federal Transit Administration.
When the building plan is approved, the County will put the project out for bid. Cedar County Clerk Dave Dowling said it is hoped that can still happen this fall.
The Cedar County Transit System has been on the grow for several years, now. The system now has 10 vans in its stable.
Cedar County Transit is a transportation service provided by Cedar County for its residents, consisting of vans that are available for the general public including persons with disabilities who reside in Cedar County.
The van service provides transportation to any county resident, Monday – Friday, from 6 a.m. – 6 p.m., to various destinations such as doctor appointments, travel to airports and cities to see family within a 200-mile radius of Hartington.
Handicap accessible vans with a wheelchair ramp are also available.
The transit vans and service are subsidized federally and by the State of Nebraska and only a nominal fee is charged for the service.
