Council approves plan to fix drainage issues

HARTINGTON — The Hartington City Council Monday approved a proposal to fix a drainage issue on Madison Avenue.

The Council agreed on a 3-1 vote Monday to accept the $266,000 proposal from JEO Engineering.

Councilman Cody Christensen was the lone dissenting voice. He said he voted against the plan because he feels it simply costs too much.

The Council and JEO engineers have been looking at this issue for several years, now.

Council President Brad Peitz said the city has to fix a long-overdue problem.

“We have to do something. There are a lot more buildings and a lot more run off then when the street was put in. The system wasn’t built to handle all of that,” he said.

JEO presented the Council with several drainage improvement options for the section of street which borders the east side of Carhart Lumber.

The plan calls for storm sewer system improvements to be aligned just behind the existing curb and gutter. The plan would also include putting additional pipe and inlets midway down the block to help ease runoff issues.

With the Council’s approval Monday of the plan, JEO engineer Nathan Boone said he hopes to have the project ready to bid out in January or February so the project can be completed in 2021.
