Coaching milestone
Win pushes Trojans to 4-1
WEST POINT - Cedar Catholic rolled past West Point-Beemer Sept. 27 scoring early and often on the way to a 49-14 thrashing to improve to 4-1 on the season in what was head coach Chad Cattau’s 150th win, all at Cedar Catholic.
Both teams entered the contest with 3-1 records but on this night, the Trojans held the upper hand.
“We had a really good week of preparation leading up to this game, they run a lot of option offense so it’s a unique look for us,” Cedar Catholic coach Chad Cattau said. “Our scout team did a great job all week in simulating their look for us. We knew the kids would need to be disciplined doing their assignments on each and every play and for the most part, we did just that.”
Hunter Bensen got things started with 8:55 remaining in the opening quarter with a touchdown from the 9 and after a Bodie Hochstein extra point kick, the Trojans were up 7-0.
A little over five minutes later, Breiton Whitmire was in the end zone for the first of his five touchdowns on the night with a 1-yard blast. A Hochstein kick later the score was 140.
West Point-Beemer got on the board but it took Whitmire just one touch of the football to fine the end zone again after the Cadet score as he returned the ensuing kickoff 76 yards for his second score of the night and Hochstein made it 21-6 with another kick.
“Offensively, our linemen did a great job of opening up holes and our backs were really good at finishing runs into contact so there were lots of good things on the offensive side of the ball in this game,” said Cattau.
Braeden Reifenrath got into the scoring action in the second frame, capping off a drive with a 6-yard run past the goal line before Whitmire would score again with 1:13 left before the halftime horn and the teams went to the break with the Trojans in command, 35-14.
Whitmire would score from the 6 and the 9 in the third quarter to finish up the scoring on the night. Couple of addition Hochstein extra points and one by Jared Rutar and the final was set.
Reifenrath had a workman like night throwing the football completing a tidy 6-out-10 passes for 68 yards, all six completions were to Jaymison Cattau.
“We had good balance between the run and the pass so if we are able to do that, we can present a lot of issues against teams,” the coach said. “We obviously still have some things we need to get better at, but we will keep working and get those things ironed out.” Whitmire finished with 143 yards on his 18 carries which included the five touchdowns. Brady Hochstein added 57 yards on seven totes and Bensen had his score in the first quarter.
Brady Hochstein, Haiden Thoene, Easton Hochstein and Jacob Steffen paced the Trojan defense with five tackles each.
Matthew Loecker and Quinn Hochstein each had a tackle behind the line of scrimmage and Brady Hochstein recovered a West Point-Beemer fumble.
The coach also deflected any attention for the milestone win.
“It’s not about me it’s about Cedar Catholic and the kids that have some through here,” Cattau said.
“I’ve been very lucky, we have some great kids.”
Cedar Catholic will return to Russ Hochstein Field Friday to host highly regarded Battle Creek. The Braves are unbeaten for the season and own wins over Boone Central and previously unbeaten Oakland-Craig.
