Cedar rolls over David City

HARTINGTON - The Trojans earn a Homecoming victory against David City on Friday night - 41-17.

Junior running back Jacob Keiser ran away with the victory, totaling 330 yards on 34 carries with three touchdowns. He set the tone early with a 92-yard touchdown carry in the first quarter, and he thanked his linemen for the seam up the middle on the play.

“Well when I saw the push our offensive line had I knew that we were going to have a good, successful ground game,” said Keiser. “Everyone did their blocking assignments just right and it worked out really good.”

Cedar would finish with 493 yards of total offense, as Keiser was able to draw enough attention from the defense. Head coach Chad Cattau said the breakout 92-yard run gave the team an excellent boost early on.

“It is big for your momentum.,” said Cattau. “It helps everybody. Our guys stay on blocks longer, and it is a big mental advantage more than anything. We expect big games out of Jacob just because of his ability, and in the fourth quarter he just came up to me and said give me the ball every play. We, for the most part, did that. He is a guy we know we can lean on to get us yards when we need them.”

Keiser’s ground and pound in the fourth quarter helped the Trojans drive down the field, and opened up some opportunities for sophomore quarterback Myles Thoene. The gunslinger would hook up with Cole Becker in the corner of the end zone for a ten-yard score to lengthen the lead to 34-17.

A kickoff by Ted Bengston took a backward hop towards the Cedar kickoff team, and Owen Heimes would fall on it to give Big Red the ball right back. Cedar would start in DC Scouts territory and would score on a fake handoff to Keiser, with Thoene rolling around the far side of the line for a three-yard score.

The young passer went 7-12 on the night for 110 yards and a touchdown, while adding 12 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. It is a bounce-back performance for a young QB who threw four interceptions in the previous week.

As for the Cedar defense, it was the first full week of practices back with senior captain linebacker Josh Pinkelman. In the game, he would finish with five tackles on the night, but Cattau says the leader means much more to the team than just his impact on the field.

“I thought Josh played well. It was kind of the Josh of old,” said Cattau with a smile. “He is an emotional leader for us and when we get down he is that guy that gets us going. He is somebody that definitely helps us with more than just his ability on the field.”

The Cedar defense held the Scouts to 63 rushing yards on 21 attempts but allowed DC senior QB Will Danielson to throw 13-22 for 242 yards and two scores. The Cedar secondary struggled to keep pace with the opposing receivers, and Cattau says that will be a point of emphasis to work on this week.

“Our DB’s we have work to do. They kind of exposed some things on us, but as a DB you have to make sure you are always ready to move on to the next play. I know our guys will do that and we will get better this week because going into next week Ponca is probably going to throw on us too now that they have seen that.”

With the win, Cedar is now 1-3 and has revenge in sight this week, traveling to Ponca. Last year, the Indians and Trojans were both undefeated headed into the final regular season game. Cedar was shutout in Ponca 20-0. This year the matchup is in Ponca again but will look much different with both teams sitting at 1-3 on the season.
