Cedar girls collect a pair of wins in Wayne

Posted in:

WAYNE - The Cedar Catholic volleyball team hit the court in Wayne for a triangular on Sept. 26 and came away with a pair of wins over the hosts and O’Neill to improve to 9-11 on the season.

Earlier in the week, the Lady Trojans dropped a best-of-five-sets match to Pierce on the road 3-0 in regular season action.

Cedar Catholic defeated Wayne in its second match of the triangular in Wayne 22-25, 25-23 and 25-20 in a come-from-behind win over the Lady Blue Devils.

After dropping the first set, the Lady Trojans came back to take over the match.

“We had a lot of success hitting off the right side in the match,” Lady Trojan coach Denae Buss said. “It was a scrappy back and forth game with some long rallies.”

Brynn Bernecker led the Cedar Catholic hitting attack with 11 winners in the match. Melayna McGregor had eight, Lauren Bernecker added seven and Addison Walter tacked on four.

Lyndsey Hamilton tipped up 18 set assists, McGregor had 11.

Bailey Hochstein had a good game in the back row with 14 digs, McKinlee Lammers had 10 and made 13 quality passes in the match.

It was an attack by committee in the match with the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Trojans swept their conference opponent 25-22 and 25-19 behind five Lady Trojans with at least three kills in the two sets.

“We had a lot of success from the service line and blocking,” Buss said. “It was good to see us mixing up our sets and using a variety of hitters.”

Katelyn Arens led the balanced attack with six winners, Brynn Bernecker and Walter each had four, Lauren Bernecker and McGregor had three each.

Walter had four aces serves, Hochstein added two while Walter and McGregor had four stuffs at the net each, Arens added three blocks.

Cedar Catholic traveled to Pierce for the regular season match up with the Lady Bluejays and Pierce defeated the Lady Trojans for the third time this season, this time by the scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-20.

“We continue to get more and more competitive with Pierce,” said Buss. “We did a much better job of finding the hitter on our block and were able to create lots of touches to slow down the ball for our back row. We did a good job of hitting our targets and created seven aces in the match.”

Hamilton accounted for four of the ace serves, Hochstein had a couple and McGregor had one.

McGregor again led a balanced attack with six kills, Brynn Bernecker had five, Lauren Bernecker and Arens each had four while Walter and Anisten Wortmann added three winners apiece.

Hochstein had 10 digs and Lauren Bernecker and Lammers had 13 and nine quality passes respectively.

Cedar Catholic was set to return to the court Oct. 1 to host another MidStates Conference foe – the 15-5 Battle Creek Bravettes at the Msgr. Werner Activities Center.

The Lady Trojans will hit the road Oct. 3 when they travel to West Point to take on Guardian Angels Central Catholic in another conference match up.

“We are focusing on our process and to keep learning every time we play,” Buss said.
