Cedar County team comes up short in bid for State title
LINCOLN — The Wynot Lady Blue Devils took on the top-rated team in Class D2 on Saturday night at the Pinnacle Bank Arena with a state championship on the line.
The Wynot Lady Blue Devils gained an early lead only to see the Overton Lady Eagles rally in the second frame to earn a three-point lead at halftime. The deciding second half was a draw and the Lady Blue Devils had to settle for runner-up honors as Overton earned the 44-40 win and the firstplace trophy.
The Lady Eagle’s controlled the offensive glass as the 20-10 advantage in rebounding helped Overton to the win.
The rest of the stats were pretty even as both teams shot 33 percent from the field for the game.
Wynot was led by Kinslee Heimes with a game-high 18 points. Kenna Oligmueller was a force inside and finished with 11 points and five steals.
Overton was paced by Natalie Wood’s double-double. She connected for 14 points and grabbed 23 rebounds.
Daisy Ryan hit a trio of threepointers on her way to 11 points to help the Lady Eagles offense.
Wynot got off to a fast start paced by six points from Allison Wieseler, three points by Kenna Oligmueller and a basket each from Kinslee Heimes and Kayla Pinkelman. Overton would fight back late, getting five points from Daisy Ryan and four points from Ashlyn Florell but the Lady Devils held the early 15-11 advantage.
Wynot struggled against the Overton defense in the second quarter with its only points coming on a pair of lay-ups by Kinslee Heimes and a free throw by Kayla Pinkelman.
Overton went on a 12-5 run to lead 23-20 at halftime. Daisy Ryan drained a pair of three-pointers and Natalie Wood worked the inside for a pair of baskets to fuel the run.
The spread stayed the same in the third quarter. Wynot got five points from Kinslee Heimes and four points from Kenna Oligmueller. Overton countered with a trey by Gracyn Luther, a put back by Natalie Wood and some free throws to keep the Lady Eagles in the lead 32-29 at the end of three periods of play.
The fourth quarter was back and forth. Wynot would close the gap only to see the Lady Eagles answer each rally.
Kinslee Heimes hit for 7 points and Kenna Oligmueller added 4 points from the low block for Wynot.
Overton got two more basket in close by Natalie Wood, a baskets from Jolee Ryan and they hit 5 of 8 free throw, when the Lady Blue Devils were forced to foul in the final minute. Overton earned the hard-fought 44-40 win and took home the gold medals.
