Cedar can’t stop Boone Central’s win streak

Posted in:

ALBION - The Cedar Catholic Trojans and head football coach, Chad Cattau knew they had an unenviable task in front of them for the opening game of the 2024 football season.

Cedar faced returning state C1 state champion Boone Central — a team that had compiled a perfect 13-0 record in 2023 and was looking to extend that streak in 2024.

To say Cedar had a big mountain to climb.

Well, Cedar Catholic got on that mountain and started to climb but could never get over the top while falling to Boone Central, 14-0 in a defensive battle.

“It was a tough game for us all around,” Cattau said. “We knew it was going to be facing the returning C1 champions and it was for sure. They have a lot of good players at every position so we were able to learn a lot about ourselves.”

The Cardinal defense stymied the Trojan offense and left Cattau and his charges with very few options.

Meanwhile the Boone Central offense had just enough to get past Cedar Catholic and win the game.

“They are going to win a lot of football games this year if they can stay healthy,” Cattau said of the Cardinals. “I know their schedule will be brutal as well. I think we found out a lot about the areas we need to improve on and we will work really hard to get better. That is one thing I know about us.”

The Cardinals scored a touchdown in the second 12 minutes on a 9-yard pass play and led 6-0 after an extra point kick was missed. They were back at it in the third frame and scored on a 5-yard run then converted the 2-point conversion to reach the final score.

The Trojan defense did record a couple of sacks and two tackles for loss and also recovered a fumble, but it wasn’t enough and Cedar Catholic took the loss.

Wayne comes to town this week as the Trojans will face another tough opponent, but at the Hartington Community Athletic Complex.

“Wayne will present some challenges for us as well, they do a good job of mixing up the run and the pass so we will have to be prepared to see both,” said Cattau. “They have some really good athletes and do a good job of getting them the ball in space so we will have to tackle well and be disciplined in what we are doing.”

The Blue Devils were defeated by Omaha Roncalli Catholic last week 31-12.
